Involved in the co‑operative movement since leaving school in 1953, his first job being with his local consumer society.

Studied at the Co‑operative College and elsewhere before joining the staff of the Co‑operative Union in 1961, before retiring in 1999.

Elected to the Board of The Phone Co‑op in 2002, and currently a Trustee of the Plunkett Foundation and a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Co‑operative Studies.
