General characteristics
A particular form of co‑operative consortium that either sells its members' products and takes a commission on each sale made, or provides shared services and charges its members accordingly.
Ownership: agricultural and fishers co‑operatives are owned by their members.
Charitable status: agricultural and fishers co‑operatives will not be eligible for charitable status.
Examples of use
Agricultural and fisheries co‑operatives will typically process and market foodstuffs produced by their members (e.g. by operating a freezer plant and distribution operation) or purchase equipment and facilities which would be too expensive for an individual farmer or fisher.
Legal forms used
Traditionally agricultural and fisheries co‑operatives have registered as industrial and provident societies, though these days some register as companies.
Profit distribution
Profit distribution will invariably be permitted as a form of rebate.
Participation issues
Participation in agricultural and fisheries co‑operatives will generally be restricted to members.
