Graduate of Manchester University, and educated as one of the early students of the Co‑operative College, before working at the CWS Bank (now the Co‑operative Bank).

Joined the Union staff in 1929, and was appointed Acting General Secretary in 1947 to cover Lord Rusholme's duties, before officially being appointed in 1950.
