Membership
Aims and Objectives
Co‑operatives North East aims to promote, build and represent co‑operatives in this region ensuring they become embedded in the mainstream economy and are valued for their principles, ethical values, democracy and social purpose as well as their diversity. Its objectives include:
- Promotion and access to co‑operative models for ethical businesses and community-based organisations
- Extending knowledge and understanding of the work of co‑operatives and their values and principles
- Online statistical information and co‑operative directory
- Access to and delivery of co‑operative related training
- Email bulletins to inform the co‑operative sector of news and opportunities
- Periodic meetings and events to engage and raise the profile of co‑operatives
- An ‘Opening Doors’ project to provide mutual contact and approach between co‑operatives and organisations that will support their work
- An electronic mediation and advice service for co‑operatives
- Research and proactive development of new co‑operative projects
- Links with other regional co‑operative councils, co‑operative development bodies, Co‑operatives UK and the Co‑operative Group
- Promotion of Co‑operatives UK services and events
- Visits to co‑operatives to learn how and why they succeed.
Membership Criteria
Membership is open by application to Co‑operatives North East’s Board of Directors, to any person, society, company, firm or association who wishes to help develop and use the services of Co‑operatives North East.
Co‑operatives North East aims to be accessible to and representative of all co‑operatives throughout the region regardless of membership criteria and is seeking members who are committed to actively furthering the interests of co‑operation; willing to offer support to co‑operatives; assisting in representing the sector and building a co‑operative network in the North East.
In particular, and to be fully representative of the whole of the co‑operative movement, Co‑operatives North East would like to encourage membership by those who can reflect the skills and knowledge of the diverse themes of co‑operative activity including retail, manufacture, housing, credit unions and other finance, social care, environment, horticulture, agriculture, creative industries, supporters trusts, tourism, education, and community.
